Model history:

Swiss born Peter Sauber was an electrician before taking a job as a car salesman in Hinwil, Switzerland. Later in life, he created a motorsports team that would bear his surname. His first racing car he built was named the C1, with the 'C' standing for his wife's name Christine. The car had a tubular frame and powered by a 1-liter Ford-Cosworth engine. The car would have a tremendous racing career lasting a decade.

In 1971, Sauber introduced his second car, the C2. The C1 and C2 had tremendous promise and attracted a growing number of customers who were eager to get one of their own. In 1973, Sauber built three C3 racers for different customers, and raced mostly in the Swiss Sports Car Championship.

In 1975, the C4 was introduced and only one example was created. This sports racer was powered by an eight-cylinder, 2-liter engine. It had an aluminium chassis, wedge shaped design, and a large wing in the back providing downforce.

The C5 soon followed and was fitted with a 2.0-liter BMW engine. It raced in the Group 6 Sports Car category, making it eligible to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car would be driven to the 1976 Interserie Championship by Herbert Muller. The C5 appeared at Le Mans in both 1977 and 1978. Both years it lead its class before it was forced to retire.

Specific history of this car:

This specific car with chassis number C5-04 was sold new in 1977 to Mr Blumer who entered the car with the Artos team in the International Swiss Championship. This series included 16 races at tracks like Hockenheim, Paul Ricard, Zeltweg and Dijon. Blumer did very well and often finished on the podium in the 1977 and 1978 season.:

In the nineties the car has been sold to the current owner who meticulously restored the car back to 1977 specification. In 2009 the car has been successfully entered at the CER championship in the hands of P. Brunn who was often the fastest driver of the 2-litre class and even did the fastest lap overall at the Nürburgring race.

During the winter C5-04 has been completely overhauled and is now presented in very good, race ready condition throughout. The car is fitted with a correct 2-litre BMW M12/7 engine in combination with a Hewland FGA 400 gearbox.

As a bonus will this car be sold including the option to race at Le Mans Classic 2010. The car has already been accepted for the race.

This is a very rare opportunity to find a Sauber C5 for sale, in the right hands for sure one of the fastest 2-litre cars available.
